Signs That You May Have Surfers Ear

Posted on

If you do a lot of surfing, it would be ideal to make sure that you are wearing surfer ear plugs every time you go out in the water. When you don't, you run the risk of developing surfers ear, which can be painful. To help you decide if this is something that you have developed, you will want to check out the following signs of this issue.

Decreased Ability To Hear

You might find that one or both of your ears are no longer able to hear as well as before. Then again, you could feel as though you might not be able to hear much of anything at all. Even if there is just a slight muffling of noise, you will want to schedule an appointment with your doctor, especially if you were out in the water recently. If you were not wearing high quality ear plugs, you may have developed surfers ear.

There Is A Sensation Of Plugged Ears

If you feel as though you have water or some sort of debris stuck in your ear canal and you are not able to get it out, you might have surfers ear. Even though it might feel as though the debris or water is stuck right in the opening of your ear, it is usually much further back. It would not be possible for you to remove the lodged water without potentially causing damage to your ear canal, which could have painful and long term effects.

You Are Suddenly Getting Reoccurring Ear Infections

When you have an increased number of ear infections, possibly one right after another, and these come soon after you have been out in the water without the proper ear protection, you may have surfers ear. You may need additional treatment above and beyond the antibiotics or ear drops you may have been given for the infections. Make sure that you are wearing your ear plugs from now on so you no longer have to go through the painful ear infections.

Should you start to believe that you have surfers ear, you will want to quickly schedule an appointment with your doctor right away. The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you will start to feel a lot better. After your treatment has ended, you will need to purchase new surfer ear plugs before you go back out into the water. This way, you won't have to go through this all over again.
